Reduces Conflict & Stress
By addressing potential issues before they become major problems, mediation can prevent misunderstandings and reduce family tension.
MCRC (The Mediation and Conflict Resolution Center) is a nonprofit organization, completely separate from the criminal justice system. We are not part of the courts, law enforcement, or corrections. Our mission is to provide neutral, community-based support that helps individuals and families navigate conflicts.
Re-Entry Mediation is a chance for people to sit down with family, friends, or anyone they see as part of their support system and talk about what coming home will look like. These conversations happen in a private, respectful space where participants can share hopes, concerns, and expectations.
The process is entirely voluntary.
Everyone has the chance to speak, listen, and be heard.
Each mediation is guided by two neutral, trained mediators. They facilitate the conversation to ensure everyone has a voice, but the direction comes from the people in the room.
Imagine a neutral space where you and your loved one can openly discuss what matters most. Participants decide the agenda, which often includes:

Research confirms what many already know from lived experience: preparing for re-entry in this way strengthens relationships and lowers barriers to success. In Maryland, re-entry mediation has become a national model, with other states now looking to replicate its approach.

It creates an opportunity to rebuild trust and strengthen relationships that may have been strained.
When families are on the same page and have a plan, it significantly increases the likelihood of a positive, sustainable return.
Mediation gives families a proactive role in shaping a positive future.
Every family is unique. Mediation allows for personalized agreements that fit your specific needs.
If you are a family member anticipating the return of a loved one, or if you are already navigating their re-entry, our services provide invaluable support. We can help you:
Prepare for their return with clear expectations.
Discuss practical arrangements and support systems.
Address any concerns or fears in a safe environment.
Develop a family plan for a positive future.
Improve communication and understanding among family members.

MCRC utilizes a peer model where returning citizens can grow into leadership roles as mediators and peacekeepers, eventually training to become circle keepers themselves. This approach not only supports individual healing but also strengthens community capacity for conflict resolution.
