Reentry Mediation: Helping Families Reconnect & Thrive

MCRC (The Mediation and Conflict Resolution Center) is a nonprofit organization, completely separate from the criminal justice system. We are not part of the courts, law enforcement, or corrections. Our mission is to provide neutral, community-based support that helps individuals and families navigate conflicts.

What is Re-Entry Mediation?

Re-Entry Mediation is a chance for people to sit down with family, friends, or anyone they see as part of their support system and talk about what coming home will look like. These conversations happen in a private, respectful space where participants can share hopes, concerns, and expectations.

Voluntary & Confidential

The process is entirely voluntary.

A Safe Space

Everyone has the chance to speak, listen, and be heard.

Neutral Guidance

Each mediation is guided by two neutral, trained mediators. They facilitate the conversation to ensure everyone has a voice, but the direction comes from the people in the room.

Why Re-Entry Mediation Matters

Research confirms what many already know from lived experience: preparing for re-entry in this way strengthens relationships and lowers barriers to success. In Maryland, re-entry mediation has become a national model, with other states now looking to replicate its approach.

Reduces Conflict & Stress

By addressing potential issues before they become major problems, mediation can prevent misunderstandings and reduce family tension.

Strengthens Family Bonds

It creates an opportunity to rebuild trust and strengthen relationships that may have been strained.

Promotes Successful Reintegration

When families are on the same page and have a plan, it significantly increases the likelihood of a positive, sustainable return.

Empowers Families

Mediation gives families a proactive role in shaping a positive future.

Tailored Solutions

Every family is unique. Mediation allows for personalized agreements that fit your specific needs.

How We Help Families

If you are a family member anticipating the return of a loved one, or if you are already navigating their re-entry, our services provide invaluable support. We can help you:

  • Prepare for their return with clear expectations.

  • Discuss practical arrangements and support systems.

  • Address any concerns or fears in a safe environment.

  • Develop a family plan for a positive future.

  • Improve communication and understanding among family members.

MCRC also offers Restorative Circles designed specifically for people returning home from incarceration. Circles provide a safe space to practice new ways of handling conflict, strengthening communication, and building healthier relationships. While circles are primarily for returning citizens, family members may be included if requested. With guidance from a trained circle keeper, participants work through real challenges and deepen the skills needed to resolve conflict in daily life—whether at home, in the workplace, or in the community.

The Peer Model: Growing Into Leadership

MCRC utilizes a peer model where returning citizens can grow into leadership roles as mediators and peacekeepers, eventually training to become circle keepers themselves. This approach not only supports individual healing but also strengthens community capacity for conflict resolution.
